 Overview of IP Routing Protocols

What is router ?

A router is the process of sending packets from a host on one network to another host on a different remote network .

What is routing ?

A routing is a process of selecting path along which the data can be transferred from source to destination.

What is IP Routing ?

It is the process of sending packets from a host on one network to another host on a different remote network.

Host X is configured to send all packets destined for remote networks to Router. Router receives the packets examines the destination IP address and forwards the packet to the outgoing interface associated with the destination network Host Y.

General forms of routing :

Static Routing -

  • Also known as non-adaptive routing.
  • Needs modification manually.
  • A router can learn a route to a remote network that is not directly connected to one of its interfaces.

Dynamic Routing -

  • Automatically select the best route.
  • Automatically receives the routing updates.
  • Dynamically decides which routes are best to go into the routing table.

What is IP Routing Protocols ?

  • A standard process by which routers learn and communicate connectivity information , called routers, each of which describes how to reach a destination host and network.
  • It is used by routers to dynamically learn all paths through a set of network and forward data between the network.
